The sewer line is the one pipe that carries everything out of the house, which is why its failure affects everything at once. It is also the plumbing job homeowners fear most — partly because it can be a significant project, and partly because it happens underground, where you cannot see what you are paying for. This page is written to fix the second problem, even when the first one is real.

Warning Signs
- Multiple drains backing up at once, especially the lowest fixtures in the house
- Sewage odors indoors, or outdoors in one persistent area of the yard
- A patch of yard that stays soggy or unusually green over the line’s path, when it has not rained
- Gurgling from toilets or drains when water runs elsewhere in the house
- Backups that return soon after a drain cleaning — the classic sign the problem is in the main line, not the fixture
Diagnosis Comes First: The Camera
A sewer camera inspection is how an honest diagnosis gets made. The camera travels the line and shows breaks, root intrusion, collapsed or bellied (sagging) sections, and where each problem sits. Roots are a common cause in Onslow County’s treed lots; age and ground movement account for much of the rest. Before agreeing to any line work, ask what the camera found and where — a company that has run a camera can answer specifically.
Repair vs. Replacement, and Trenchless vs. Digging
Many sewer problems are localized — one broken joint, one root-invaded section — and a spot repair addresses them without touching the rest of the line. Full replacement enters the picture when the line is deteriorated along its length, collapsed in multiple places, or undersized or badly sloped throughout. Where conditions allow, trenchless methods (such as lining or bursting a new line through the old path) can replace a line with far less digging; where they do not, traditional excavation is the answer, and the yard restoration should be part of the quote conversation either way.
As general information only, sewer line work in this market commonly falls in the range of $3,000 to $8,000, depending on length, depth, access, method, and how much of the line is involved — that is a broad orientation range, not a quote for your property. The company that cameras your line gives you your number, and for a project of this size, a second opinion is never a bad idea.
All work is performed by an independent local company licensed by the NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors (P1 at this scale), under its own license and insurance.
